What to look for in a quality Childcare service

Step 2

Visit your top three childcare providers

Begin by arranging a time that suits both the Childcare provider and yourself. Some Childcare providers work directly with the children and may want to meet with you initially outside of the childcare hours. If that is the case, then arrange to come back and see the service when the children are there and bring your own child too. Make sure that you get all of the information that you need including (but not only) the following:

  • Can they meet your situation and needs?
  • Is the Childcare service notified to the HSE?
  • How many children do they care for?
  • What are the hours of operation?
  • What days are they closed?
  • What are the fees?
  • Is there a refund policy?
  • Do the childcare staff have a good knowledge of child development and working with children?
  • What childcare experience/training do the childcare staff have?
  • Do they cater for children with additional needs? if not, why not?
  • Is there a respectful approach towards diversity, where each child's sense of identity is valued?
  • What programme of care do they have in place?
  • Do they encourage parental involvement?
  • Can you visit when ever you choose?
  • Is there a suitable, nutritious varied menu available where the service supplies food?
  • Do you have a space available? If not:
  • Is there a waiting list? How long is the waiting list?
