What is a childminder?

A childminder is a person who looks after children in the childs home or the childminders own home.

Childminders may work year round for the full working day or for different periods during the day. Parents and childminders negotiate their own terms e.g. fees, contracts, hours of work etc.

Presently a childminder working alone should look after no more than six children (including his/her own) who are aged six or under. No more than three of these should be under the age of one year.

A childminder looking after more than three children (not including their own) is obliged to notify their service to Tusla.
